How to Read WhatsApp Messages Without Opening the Chat on iPhone
Short answer: there are three ways. You can turn off read receipts in WhatsApp, read the preview in the notification, or, on iOS 27, read in NotiKeep, which saves the text of every notification organized by conversation. With the last two you don’t open the chat, so WhatsApp doesn’t mark the message as read, doesn’t send blue ticks, and doesn’t show you as online.
1. Turn off read receipts
In WhatsApp, go to Settings › Privacy and turn off Read Receipts. From then on, people won’t see blue ticks in your one-on-one chats.
There are two trade-offs: you also stop seeing other people’s blue ticks, and read receipts are still sent in group chats. Opening WhatsApp still shows you as online, too.
2. Read the notification
The preview on the Lock Screen or in Notification Center shows the message without opening the chat. It works for a quick look, but the notification disappears when you tap it, clear Notification Center, or open WhatsApp, and you can’t get back to it later.
3. Read in NotiKeep, on iOS 27
NotiKeep saves the text of every WhatsApp notification and organizes it by conversation, like an inbox. You read in NotiKeep, on your own time, without opening WhatsApp. Since the chat isn’t opened, reading there doesn’t mark the message as read, doesn’t send blue ticks (the blue check marks), and doesn’t show you as online.
With Pro, to read even faster, shake your iPhone with NotiKeep open, or assign the Show Latest Notification shortcut to Back Tap (Settings › Accessibility › Touch › Back Tap) or the Action button. It shows the latest message in a notification; tap it and NotiKeep opens the conversation.
Only works on iOS 27 or later. On iPhone 11 and iPhone SE (2nd generation) or newer, update in Settings › General › Software Update. iPhone XR, XS, and earlier can’t get iOS 27. See the list of models.

Frequently asked questions
Will the sender know I read the message?
Not while you read in NotiKeep or in the notification. When you open the chat in WhatsApp, it marks the message as read as usual, if read receipts are on.
Does reading in NotiKeep show me as online?
No. Reading in NotiKeep doesn’t open WhatsApp, so it doesn’t make you appear online.
Can I reply from NotiKeep?
No. NotiKeep only saves and shows messages. To reply, open WhatsApp.
Does it work with muted chats?
No. Muted chats don’t generate a notification with the text, so the message never reaches NotiKeep. The same goes for notifications without previews.
Does it work in group chats?
Yes. NotiKeep shows who sent each message and organizes them by group conversation. Keep in mind that in groups, turning off read receipts in WhatsApp doesn’t hide blue ticks; reading in NotiKeep doesn’t send any.
Does it work on iPhone 11, 13, or 15?
It works on any iPhone running iOS 27 or later. What matters is the iOS version, not the model: iOS 27 runs on iPhone 11 and later and on iPhone SE (2nd generation) or newer. iPhone XR, XS, and earlier can’t get iOS 27, so they can’t run NotiKeep.
