Can you read the original text of an edited message on iPhone?
Short answer: NotiKeep keeps text it has already saved from a notification. Editing a message later does not change that local copy. If the edit generates another notification, its text may be saved as a separate entry. Capture must be configured first; this is not retroactive recovery or automatic version history.
Two separate copies
The messaging app shows the current message. NotiKeep holds the text that arrived earlier in a notification. It does not query the conversation or replace saved text when the source message changes.
How to check earlier text
- Set up notification capture in Shortcuts before receiving messages.
- Allow notifications with text previews for the chosen source app.
- Open the conversation in NotiKeep and compare the captured entries and their timestamps.
Version 1.1 also offers a manual edited label. It does not alter the original text or establish an automatic link between entries.
What the project's device tests observed
Recorded physical-device tests with WhatsApp and iOS 27 showed an edit arriving as a new notification with complete text and the edit time, without a reliable edited indicator. Delete for everyone removed the notification without triggering a new capture. The earlier NotiKeep copy remained.
These are developer observations reviewed on October 16, 2026. The exact date of the original test was not recorded. They do not guarantee behavior across every app version or message type.
Repeat the check
With capture active, receive a harmless test message, verify it in NotiKeep, ask the sender to edit it and compare entries. Record your iOS and source-app versions; delivery behavior can change.
When the old text will be missing
- It arrived before setup or was never captured.
- The source app did not send a notification.
- The preview hid its text.
- The local record was deleted or expired under your retention setting.

Frequently asked questions
Does NotiKeep automatically detect edits?
No. It saves delivered notifications. Edited labels are manual, and similar entries can be different messages.
Can it recover text edited before installation?
No. The earlier text must already have been captured.
Does every edit create a notification?
There is no guarantee. It depends on the source app, settings and iOS delivery.
