# How to check a cleared or missing iPhone notification

By [Gustavo Takechi](https://notikeep.app/en/about/), developer of NotiKeep. Updated October 20, 2026.

**Short answer:** clearing an alert does not necessarily delete its content in the source app. Check that app first. The exact dismissed preview must still be in Notification Center or have been saved earlier; iPhone has no trash folder for cleared alerts.

## 1. Check Notification Center

Swipe up from the middle of the Lock Screen, or down from the top center when unlocked. Expand the app's group. A banner leaving the screen does not necessarily mean it was cleared.

## 2. Look in the source app

A message may remain in its chat, an email in the inbox or an event in the calendar. Clearing the alert and deleting the original item are different actions. Opening WhatsApp may also update read status according to your settings; see [reading without opening the chat](https://notikeep.app/en/read-whatsapp-without-opening-iphone/).

## 3. If you used Clear

Notification Center has no command to restore its cleared alert list. A WhatsApp backup may contain chats, but it is not an archive of Notification Center. Installing an app now does not recover a preview it never received.

If the sender deleted the message for everyone, see the separate [deleted WhatsApp message guide](https://notikeep.app/en/see-deleted-whatsapp-messages-iphone/).

## 4. Check an archive already configured

If NotiKeep capture was already active, open Recents and find the conversation. The original alert can disappear while the saved text remains. Without capture, the app cannot recreate earlier alerts.

For future text notifications, NotiKeep uses Shortcuts and requires iOS 27 or later. The chosen source app must deliver a notification with content. Follow [setup and testing](https://notikeep.app/en/ios-27-notification-automation/).

## Hidden, silenced and cleared are different

Focus, summaries and preview settings affect when and how alerts appear. Check Notification Center, the source app and Settings › Notifications before assuming deletion. Read about [Notification Center versus a persistent history](https://notikeep.app/en/iphone-notification-history/).

## Frequently asked questions

**Does clearing an alert delete its WhatsApp message?**

Clearing Notification Center is different from deleting a message inside WhatsApp. Check the chat, considering your read receipt settings.

**Is there an iPhone notification trash folder?**

Notification Center has no trash folder for cleared alerts. Check the source app or a previously saved copy.

**Can the latest-notification shortcut restore any cleared alert?**

NotiKeep Pro’s shortcut only shows the latest accessible message already saved in NotiKeep. It does not restore Notification Center or earlier uncaptured alerts.
